Wide Angle3 Preview

Preview of the Wide Angle 3 (WA3) benefit auction for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). WA3’s annual event will happen on March 21 curated by Michael Gold and Sirje Gold, who have paired 31 established and upcoming artists

Pacific Electric Lofts Gallery, 5–11pm
In conjunction with the downtown art walk, the Pacific Electric Lofts Gallery is featuring “The edge of dream, the fall into reality” with Mitra Forouzan, Gabriella Kashani, Angela Larian, Firoozeh Neman and Patricia Torkan
Double Take
Hammer Museum, 7pm
Johan Grimonprez’s film Double Take makes its West Coast avant-premiere, with Alfred Hitchcock as a “paranoid history professor” set in the Cold War period
Franz West: Talk / Show
USC: Roski School of Fine Arts, 7–8pm
The Handtmann Photography Lecture Series presents a trio: Franz West, Andreas Reiter Raabe and Zlatan Vukosavljevic, with a Jim Shaw backdrop and surprise musical guest, in conjunction with West’s show at the LACMA, Franz West, To Build a House You Start with the Roof: Work, 1972-2008

Launch party for the narrative publication accompanied by a round table discussion in conjunction with the current exhibition Sarah Cain and Rebecca Morris
Help Build a Forest
Machine Project, 8:30pm
Christy McCaffrey and Sara Newey were last seen at LACMA building the Heavy Metal Gothic Arch. Now they are returning to Machine to recreate a Magic Forest inside the space for the month of April. Machine is looking for volunteers who are interested in making a “very real looking fake forest” and set design. McCaffrey and Newey’s forest opens March 28

Trekking Los Angeles: Local Adventures in a Global City
Farmlab, 12pm
Hosted by Karen Mack, founder of LA Commons, this series discussion topic promotes the accessibility of the diverse neighborhood of L.A. and tackles the question, “how does culture contribute to community development?”
Robert Davolio: From Concept to Fabrication
SCI-Arc, 1pm
Featuring an afternoon SCI-Arc faculty lecture of Robert Davolio’s topic From Concept to Fabrication, building non-cartesian structural systems in Hong Kong
Franz West and Darsie Alexander
LACMA, 5pm
In conjunction with the opening of Franz West’s current show Franz West, to Build a House You Start with the Roof, Work 1972-2008, West and Darsie Alexander, chief curator at the Walker Art Center, will speak to the history of his work, his view towards younger artists and the evolution of public sculpture. The show is on view until June 7
Final Projects: Group XXVII
Mak Center, 7–9pm
Including a performance from Simon Fujiwara at 8pm. Group XXVII will present their final project exhibition which features the work of international artists Simon Fujiwara and Hanakam & Schuller team, as well as architects Alan Cicmak and the team Schinegger/Rutzinger. This show will be on view at the Schindler House until Sunday, March 15

Featuring 13 artists including John Baldesssari, Jonathan Borofsky, Sarah Charlesworth, Roy Dowell, Joseph Kosuth, John M. Miller, among others. The title of the show comes from the viewer’s process of “reading” an artwork
Boards and Nails: On Non-Profit Boards

Organized by The After School Arts Program (ASAP) and curated by Mathew Timmons the presentation will include the following guest speakers: Carol Stakenas, director of LACE; Walter Askins, board member of the Pasadena Arts Museum and Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art; Letitia Ivins, member of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and Maria Grant, board overseer for the Huntington Art Museum

Featuring the exhibition of her New Work, McCarty is known for “diaphonous watercolor portraits” and figurative painting. Also simultaneously on view in the project room is the work of David Kendren. Both exhibitions are on view until May 16

A group exhibition featuring the work of Nathan Mabry, Deborah Satter, Christian Tedeschi and Rob Thom, highlighting the notion of the objective perception, questioning, “what exists beyond is what is immediately tangible?” This group show is on view until April 18
John Miller: The Natural Order

New works by John Miller at both East and West Galleries featuring photography, gold-leaf assemblages, rug and wallpaper pieces and installation focusing around the idea of accumulation. On view until April 25

A lecture with Wolmar Castillo, Taxco silversmith and son of Pineda contemporary Antonio Castillo. Castillo Jr. speaks on the current design environment in Taxco in the shadow of the Silver Ages that influences his and his designers’ work

Occult LA: Esoteric Cinema In The Southland
Cinefamily, 8pm
For the first part of the evening, author Erik Davis leads the discussion devoted to So-Cal’s alternative spiritual culture and shows a series of clips from Meshes of the Afternoon, The Trip, Seconds, Head. For the second part, publisher Jodi Wille describes L.A.’s “wild and wooly spiritual fringe.” Other guest presenters include Maja D’Aoust, Paul Nugent and Kenneth Anger, among others. $13
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18
A Collection of Ideas…Hip Hop Saves Lives
SMMoA, 7pm
The Museum hosts educators and students from the High School of Recording of Recording Arts (HSRA) in Minneapolis. Join HSRA’s Tony Simmons and Mike Conway as they discuss their approach to engaging at-risk youth through the inspiration of hip hop music and its culture. Also featuring Sam Seidel, author of his upcoming book Hip Hop Genius. The students have prepared a performance inspired by the current SMMoA artist Elias Sime following the discussion
