The College Art Associate (CAA) of New York holds it 97th Annual Conference this weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center and various off-site locations. Special events feature programming at the convention center, open house visits to galleries, discussions at the Convention Center, as well as various L.A. art tours. $25 for most events, please check site for further information

Expanding Architecture: Conversations on Design and Activism

Join the conversation with Metropolis magazine’s editor, Susan S. Szenasy and writers from the book, Expanding Architecture: Design as Activism with designers, developers and policy makers. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing

The Cool School

Hosted at target=”fya”>REDCAT and screened by the CAA Annual Conference, The Cool School, a documentary about renegade artists who built the L.A. art scene from the bottom up, featuring Ed Ruscha, Dennis Hopper, Frank Gehry, Billy Al Bengston, Irving Blum, Robert Irwin and more. Director Morgan Neville hosts a Q&A session preceding the screening

Complementary to the CAA’s 2009 Annual Conference at the Book and Trade Fair, Afterall (http://www.afterall.org/) presents a series of conversations between artists and critics alike. At 4pm, join the discussion on L.A.’s Feral Institutions with Mark Allen (Machine Project), Michael Ano (ASAP), Sean Dockray (The Public School) and Christine Wertheim (The Institute for Figuring), moderated by Mathew Timmons; Saturday at 11am the conversations continue with artists Piero Golia and Richard Jackson with critic Andrew Berardini. The Centennial of Italian Futurism
Istituto Italiano di Cultura, 6pm
In conjunction with the College Art Association, the Institute presents a roundtable discussion on the centennial of Futurism, the movement started in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.The discussion features David Gariff, art historian and lecturer, National Gallery of Art in Washington; Matthew McLendon, Curator at Cornell Fine Arts Museum; Michelangelo Sabatino, Assistant Professor of architecture, University of Houston; Siobhan Conaty, Assistant Professor of Art History at La Salle University; and Ara Merjian, Lauro de Bosis Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University and Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at NYU. The Warhol Party
USC Fisher Museum of Art, 8–10pm
The Fisher Museum of Art presents the opening reception for The Warhol Party, an exhibition of 100 original Polaroids and 50 gelatin silver prints, gifted by the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program, that served as the template for Warhol’s portrait paintings. Trekking Los Angeles: Melrose & Heliotrope, 2–7pm
In conjunction with Trekking Los Angeles, East Hollywood Neighborhood Council and East Hollywood Arts, this event merges more than a dozen art galleries/creative spaces (Antai, Breakfast Club, Junc, Think Space, among others) with biking in East Hollywood. Meet at “Hel-Mel,” intersection of Heliotrope Drive and Melrose Avenue, for a post-cycle party

Bruce Conner’s Explosive Cinema: A Tribute, Part I
UCLA Film & Television Archive @ Billy Wilder Theater, Hamer Museum, 7:30pm
The first part of a tribute to Bruce Conner (1933–2008), “the father of MTV-style editing” co-presented by the Hammer Museum, the UCLA Film and Television Archive present in association with REDCAT and Los Angeles Film Forum. Longtime friend Dennis Hopper will introduce the program with honored guest Jean Conner. Programming includes Comic Ray, A Movie, The White Rose, Breakaway, Vivian, Ten Second Film, Mongoloid, America is Waiting, Crossroads and Easter Morning. Part 2 will be presented at REDCAT on March 2

Women in the City – One Year Later

Join the panel discussion with West of Rome’s Emi Fontana, artist Barbara Kruger, and Broad Foundation curator Joanne Heyler, moderated by Joshua Decter, director of the Public Arts Studies Program at USC, of the viral public art exhibition that first spread throughout the streets of L.A. last February. Myron Kaufamn: Observations and Ideas

Forever Haunt You

Artist Anthony Burdin presents his solo show with an opening performance and reception featuring large-scale pencil drawings, paintings, textiles and two video pieces. His installation/performance takes place Sunday with his ghostly structure titled, JUNK TOMB CRYPTOS VII IV VIII – VII IV IX (2009)

With the assistance of Martha Graham and beginning in 1964, Batsheva has gained international success as Israel’s esteemed dance company. Directed Israeli dancer/choreographer by Ohad Naharin and performed by 10 dancers to Maxim Waratt’s music
