Seeing “New York Waterfalls” from Los Angeles

By Caryn | July 8, 2008

Reading Artnet this morning, Jerry Saltz’s article on Olafur Eliasson’s The New York City Waterfalls (originally here on NY Magazine) reminded me how badly I want to see them. I am intrigued by how Eliasson creates works that truly involve the viewer and, in this case, becomes part of the New York landscape (its architecture, people). And these public art projects, like The Gates, grab the attention of the general public in a way that isn’t pedestrian but also is accessible. Which begs the question, and perhaps a second exploratory post, but where are Los Angeles’ waterfalls and gates?

Of course, with an impending move across the world in August traveling for fun this summer is out of the question even if it is art related. But that’s what we have Flickr for – a way to see the same thing in numerous versions from the differing eyes of others. With over 1000 images of Eliasson’s The New York City Waterfalls (it just opened on June 30) it’s the next best thing to being there.
